the Trust pills are the cheapest ocp in the country.
It is a combination pills containing ethinyl estradiol AND progesterone,levonorgestrel.Other OCPs have mestranol.
MODE OF ACTION OF OCPs:
-either estrogen or progesterone component can inhibit ovulation by suppressing the gonadotrophins
-cervical mucus thickens and becomes viscous,which is hostile to sperm migration through the endocervix
-the endometrium flattens and becomes inactive for implantation
SIDE EFFECTS:
breakthrough bleeding or amenorrhea,either one often seen when very low dose preparations of ocp are used
nausea,vomiting,weight gain, breast tenderness but these disappear afer two to three cycles of ocp is taken
COMPLICATIONS
hepatocellular adenoma-happens in 3/100,000 woman years of use
postpill amenorrhea
hypertension
cardiovascular diseases- can be prevented if reduced amount of estrogen is used
thromboembolism-estrogen causes increased plasma level of factorVII.
